Which AI Tool Should You Use? A Plain Comparison

TL;DR

  • Most people only need one paid subscription. Pick based on the work you actually do.
  • ChatGPT is the best all-rounder. Claude is better at long documents and writing. Gemini wins if you live in Google.
  • Midjourney and NotebookLM are specialists, not general assistants.
  • Every one of them has a free tier good enough to test before you spend anything.

The honest answer to “which AI should I use” is that the big three are closer than the internet suggests, and the difference that matters is which one fits the job in front of you.

Here is a plain read on each, and what it is genuinely better at.

ChatGPT: the default

If you are going to have one subscription, this is usually it. Broadest feature set, biggest ecosystem, and it does most things well without being the very best at any single one.

Strongest for: general work, images, voice, browsing the live web, and building your own custom assistants without code. $20 a month for the paid tier, and the free version is genuinely usable.

Claude: long documents and careful writing

Better at holding a long document in its head without losing the thread, and noticeably better at matching a writing voice. It reasons through messy problems rather than jumping to a tidy answer.

Strongest for: contracts, reports, research, anything where you paste in fifty pages and ask questions. Also the pick if you write for a living and care what the output sounds like.

Gemini: if you already live in Google

The argument for Gemini is location. It runs inside Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, so it is sitting in the tools you already open.

Strongest for: Google Workspace users, anyone doing a lot of inbox triage, and Android owners. If your business runs on Google, this is the least disruptive option.

The specialists

  • Midjourney. The best-looking image generation available, and the one that most rewards learning to prompt properly. Not an assistant. It makes pictures.
  • NotebookLM. Answers only from documents you upload, and cites the page. Free. The right tool when making things up would be a serious problem.
  • Zapier and Make. Not AI tools exactly, but this is how you get AI to run without you sitting there.

How to actually decide

Take the thing you do most often that eats your time. Email? Try Gemini first. Long documents? Claude. Everything else and a bit of images? ChatGPT.

Then use the free tier on one real task for a week before you pay anybody. The tool that saves you the most in that week is your answer, and it is often not the one with the loudest marketing.

What about the free versions?

Every tool here has a free tier, and for a lot of people the free tier is the right permanent answer. The paid versions mostly buy you three things: higher usage limits, access to the smarter model, and the extra features like file handling and custom assistants.

If you hit a usage limit twice in one week, that is your signal to upgrade. If you never hit one, you do not need to pay. Nobody selling subscriptions is going to tell you that, so consider it told.
