What Is Claude Code, And Do You Need It?
- Claude Code is a coding tool. If you do not write software, you almost certainly want Cowork instead.
- It reads a whole codebase, edits files, and runs commands rather than just suggesting snippets.
- It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, on desktop, on the web, and from Slack.
- It is included in Claude Pro, with heavier limits on the Max tiers.
Claude Code comes up constantly in AI discussions, and a lot of non-technical people assume it is something they are missing out on.
Short answer: it is a tool for people who write software. If that is not you, there is a different Anthropic product that does want your attention, and it is at the bottom of this page.
What it actually does
Most AI coding help works like autocomplete. You are in a file, it suggests the next few lines.
Claude Code works at the project level. It reads across a whole codebase, understands how the pieces connect, edits multiple files, runs commands, and works through a task rather than answering a question. Anthropic describes it as understanding your codebase, editing files, running commands, and helping you ship faster.
The practical difference is that you describe an outcome, not a line of code.
Where it runs
- Terminal. The original and still the main way people use it.
- Your editor. Extensions for VS Code and JetBrains.
- Desktop app. macOS, Windows and Linux.
- Web. At claude.ai/code.
- Phone. iOS and Android.
- Slack and GitHub. Kick off a task from a message, or go from an issue to a pull request.
Who it is for
Developers, from solo builders to enterprise teams. Also technical founders, data people who write scripts, and anyone comfortable in a terminal.
If you have never opened a terminal and have no plans to, this is not a gap in your knowledge. It is a tool for a job you do not do.
What it costs
It is bundled into the Claude subscription rather than sold separately. Pro at around $17 to $20 a month covers short work in small codebases. The Max tiers at $100 and $200 a month exist because heavy use burns through limits quickly.
That pricing tells you who it is aimed at. Nobody pays $200 a month for something they use twice.
What most people actually want
Anthropic makes a second agentic product called Cowork, and it is the one built for everyone else. Same idea, applied to normal work instead of code: it works across your files and tools, takes a goal, and delivers something for review.

If you are curious anyway
Nothing stops you trying it, and a small number of non-developers use it for file wrangling and data cleanup because it can run commands.
But the honest advice is that the learning curve buys you very little if you are not shipping software, and the same subscription already contains a tool aimed squarely at you. If what you want is an assistant that handles your actual work, start with using Claude for real work instead.
