Step 1: Make sure you meet the basic requirements
The basic requirements to get a Louisiana real estate license are simple. Do you meet these requirements?
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have a high school diploma or equivalent
Step 2: Register for real estate licensing classes
A real estate license is required for most real estate jobs. Louisiana has educational requirements you must fulfill before they will let you get a real estate license, which are completed with the following:
- A 90 hour Louisiana pre-licensing course, OR
- You have completed equivalent course work at an accredited college or university, OR
- You have completed pre-licensing course work in another jurisdiction that is similar to Louisiana. If that is the case, 60 of the 90 hours may be credited to you, but you would still have to complete 30 hours of Louisiana-specific pre-licensing courses.
- Members of the Louisiana Bar Association are exempt from the pre-licensing course requirement.

Step 3: Apply to take the Louisiana real estate exam
You can apply to take the Louisiana real estate exam after you have completed the licensing education requirements. The Louisiana real estate exam fee is $90.
Step 4: Complete the Louisiana real estate license application
The application will ask you some basic questions about you and your background, including any other real estate licenses you have held or currently hold. The Louisiana license application fee is $45.
Louisiana requires a criminal background check for all real estate license applicants. Applicants with a criminal history will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
