Step 1: Make sure you meet the basic requirements
The basic requirements to get a Hawaii real estate license are simple. Do you meet all of these requirements?
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have a high school diploma or equivalent
- You have the legal right to work in the US as a US citizen, US national or legal alien
- You have a social security number
Step 2: Register for real estate licensing classes
A real estate license is required for most real estate jobs. Hawaii has educational requirements you must fulfill before they will let you get a real estate license, which are completed with the following:
- A 60 hour pre-licensing course, OR
- Hold a real estate degree from an approved college or university, OR
- Provide proof of completion of pre-licensing education from a jurisdiction considered to be equal or superior to Hawaii’s pre-licensing education, OR
- Possess a law degree from an accredited law school in the US

Step 3: Apply to take the Hawaii real estate exam
You can apply to take the Hawaii real estate salesperson’s exam after you have completed the licensing education requirements.
PSI Services is the testing agency for the State of Hawaii and they manage the exam process through their facilities. The Hawaii real estate exam fee is $68 and is non-refundable.
Step 4: Complete the Hawaii real estate license application
The application will ask you some basic questions about you and your background, including any other real estate licenses you have held or currently hold. There will be questions to help determine your level of honesty, integrity and competency.
The Hawaii license application fee is prorated and the exact amount will be printed on your score card when you pass the state exam. You have two years to apply for licensure after passing the Hawaii real estate exam.
